Chapter Twenty-three

Victor walked in his spot and looked around. All he could do was shake his head and go in the office. His revenue had been way down over the last several weeks and he knew exactly why it was going that way. Victor also knew that the trend would continue and he knew exactly why that was too.

The reason for his money problems was simple; one by one, all of his big money players stopped coming. And you can’t have a high stakes poker game without big money players. He was sure that they took their money to Conversations, where Jackie Washington had taken over and was now operating her crew from.

After Jackie returned from Africa and found that Wanda had given Victor her game, with Wanda’s blessing, Jackie went to Freeport to talk the matter over with Black. He would not give Jackie back her game; however, because of her loyalty to Black, he made Jackie captain of her own crew.

After Wanda had Cyrus killed for talking to the FBI, she asked Jackie to take over Conversations. Black assigned his longtime friend Sonny Edwards, who in the early years served as Black’s consigliere, to perform the same function for Jackie.

The next night, Jackie was back at what was now Victor’s spot. When she left, Erminia Cartwright, who had taken control of the women that Jackie allowed access to her elite clientele, left with her and so did all of the women.

“First she takes all the ho’s, now she takes all the money,” Victor complained to his partner, Flip.

“What you gonna do about it?” Flip asked.

“What can I do?” Victor turned around and walked out of the office. He headed straight for the bar. “Double Crown rocks.”

“You wanna go over there and we have a little talk with her?”

“Two things.”

“What’s that, Vic?”

“One, Jackie is a captain now.” Bartender sat the drink in front of Victor. He picked up the glass and took a swallow. “Two she is very close to Black. Both of those things make it a bad idea to have the kind of talk you wanna have with her.”

“So what you gonna do?”

“Only thing that I can do at this point is talk to Wanda.”

“What’s that gonna do?”

“I don’t know. But Wanda is the boss of this family now. It is up to her to hear and settle my grievance.”

The following evening, Victor went to see Wanda at Cuisine. It wasn’t open for business yet, but Wanda was glad to be able to operate from there instead of her living room. Victor laid out his grievances with Jackie. After hearing what Victor had to say, Wanda wanted to tell him to work it out for himself, but wasn’t willing to run the risk that his solution may involve violence.

Wanda was curious to know what type of solution Victor would come up with, so she asked.

“I think that Jackie needs to make this right by returning what she took from me,” Victor said.

Wanda picked up the phone and called Keisha.
